choosing a handyman
Choosing a Handyman
Are you like the other million and some
homeowners that need a handyman to provide home repairs
and property maintenance? Sometimes it's something simply
as in painting a surface, fixing a hole in the wall or remodeling
the bathroom. Often times it is something silly like a broken
faucet or loose banister. There is constantly something
that needs repairing. Unfortunately in today's world it
can be extremely difficult to find a qualified professional
in your area that can work with your budget.
Before hiring a handy man, there a few
steps that are recommended to ensure that your needs be
met. First and foremost, depending on the laws in your state,
always make sure to check for a valid and current license
upon having work done. It is also important to make sure
that your handyman is properly insured.
Below are a few additional steps to keep
in mind:
-
Make a detailed list of everything
that you would like to have done, and be prepared to
present this organized list to your handyman during
a pre-screening and upon arrival. You want to make sure
that the handyman you hire has the skills to successfully
perform the tasks required of him. Also, presenting
your handyman with an organized list upon arrival will
help him plan the most efficient way to go about getting
things done, saving you time and money.
-
Look for a trusted referral from a
friend, relative of business partner. This type of a
referral will make your screening process easier. If
you can't find a referral from anyone you know, try
searching through advertisements, mail and the internet.
Be prepared to screen your handyman. Make
sure to get a handful of references from him/her. Are there
any customer complaints filed on him? Find out about what
skills they have, what experience they have, and how much
they charge. Does your handyman offer free estimates? Do
they charge by the hour?
