Help Fixing that Leaky Bathtub
Leaking faucets in a bathtub can cause
considerable damage if left un-repaired for a long period
of time. Not only does it waste water, but it eventually
breaks down the surface. Bathtub leaks have been known to
wear right through the enamel. Signs of damage include a
green or faint brown stain on the enamel.
Common causes of bathtub leaks include
loose washers and seats, material deterioration, and differential
joint movement. If the leak is on the faucet, you can try
replacing the washer or the brass seat that is located behind
the washer.
Sometimes a leak is formed when gaps develop
from the deterioration of materials that seal the joint
between the walls and the bathtub. You will need to reseal
this area to prevent the leak. Gaps can also develop overtime
from pressure of supporting an occupant and water.
In addition, if you are experiencing a
leaking shower faucet, you will most likely need to replace
the o-ring or valve stem packing on the cold water valve.
It is best to call in a plumber to handle this job.
